Wine is bottled poetry

Steeped in a rich history of wine making, Montpellier has been producing award-winning wines since the 1890s.

Surrounded by three imposing mountain ranges, the Tulbagh Valley offers a unique climate ideal for viticulture exclusive to the Cape. Unlike many areas in the Western Cape, the summer nights are cool and fresh due to the massive surrounding mountains that are renowned for occasional summer snow caps, often as late as Christmas. A distinctive terroir and a wide variation of soil types enable the production of a diverse range of top-quality wines. Montpellier is part of the Tulbagh Wine Route known for featuring award-winning wines with integrity and character representative of this Tulbagh Valley terroir.

Historically acclaimed for producing outstanding white wines, as featured in our Michelangelo Gold Gewürztraminer, our Montpellier wine makers have diversified and expanded into producing red varieties that are now creating a name for themselves in the wine industry. This can be seen with past achievements such as Gold for the Shiraz 2009 and Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, Veritas Gold for the Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, and Michelangelo Silver and Veritas Silver for the Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 and 2010 respectively. Most recently we were awarded with Silver for our Montpellier Shiraz 2011 and 2013, our Montpellier Cabernet 2011, 2012 and 2013 as well as our Montpellier Spyseniersberg 2011 at the Michelangelo 2015. The highest accolades however came from our MCC as we received Double Gold Gran D’Or for both our MCC Brut 2010 and MCC Rose 2011!
