Montpellier had since the 1890's a long history of producing award winning top
quality white
wines. We are also now having astonishing results with our red wines, above all
those from our newly established Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Petit verdot
and Mourvèdre vineyards. These vines were
planted on an alluvial mound where the virgin, pebbly, almost
bouldery soil is shaping an immense terroir. The same
reddish pebbles on well-drained sedimentary loams as found in Chateauneuf
du Pape, origin
of the most famous Cotes du Rhone wine in France.
Experience a bottle of Montpellier's
Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz to appreciate the consequence of
this terroir.

The red varieties
planted since 2003 on Montpellier
are now making a name for themselves.
At the South African Young Wine Show
in 2007,
the Cabernet Sauvignon and the
Petit verdot
were awarded Silver Medals,
and at the recently held 2008
competition,
our Cabernet Sauvignon was
awarded a Gold Medal, and was
also judged the second best
Cabernet Sauvignon in the Paarl/Wellington/Tulbagh
region of
the competition.
