Wines

Montpellier had since the 1890's a long history of producing award winning top quality white wines. We are also now having astonishing results with our red wines, above all those from our newly established Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Petit verdot and Mourvèdre vineyards. These vines were planted on an alluvial mound where the virgin, pebbly, almost bouldery soil is shaping an immense terroir. The same reddish pebbles on well-drained sedimentary loams as found in Chateauneuf du Pape, origin of the most famous Cotes du Rhone wine in France. Experience a bottle of Montpellier's Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz  to appreciate the consequence of this terroir.

The red varieties planted since 2003 on Montpellier are now making a name for themselves. At the South African Young Wine Show in 2007, the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Petit verdot were awarded Silver Medals, and at the recently held 2008 competition, our Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded a Gold Medal, and was also judged the second best Cabernet Sauvignon in the Paarl/Wellington/Tulbagh region of the competition.

Winemakers

Theo Brink joined Montpellier in the beginning of 2008 as Master Winemaker, part of Montpellier’s drive to constantly advance the quality of our wines. Well-known in the South African wine industry, Theo brings many decades of experience in viticulture and winemaking to Montpellier. After finishing his formal training at Elsenburg, he progressed to the position of chief viticultural counselor at Distillers Corporation. He then became the Director and Winemaker at Uitkyk Wine Estate. Theo also had a stint as Winemaker at Devon Hill Cellars and later De Wetshof Wine Estate. Numerous achievements as Winemaker includes several Gold and double Gold Medal winners, the second best Shiraz in South Africa and a Absa Top 10 Pinotage

Cobus Viviers received a B.Agric degree in Viticulture and Oenology in 2007 from Elsenburg, where he was Chairman of the Students Council. With some experience gained in Europe, he joined Montpellier in 2008 as Assistant Winemaker. Cobus has an energetic passion for winemaking, and brings with him contemporary winemaking technology experience and ideas fresh from Elsenburg, hoping to influence the older folks at Montpellier!

Theo and Cobus are patiently crafting wines that are becoming even more eminent every year; wines with a style that is definitely not ordinary, and embodies our unique terrior.

Emeritus winemakers

Winemaker Anton Krynauw retired from Montpellier in September 2008 after a 5 year stint. Anton supervised Montpellier during the vital renovation phase, and established the new red and white wine vineyards on the Chapel Hill. His achievements were crowned at the South African Young Wine Show in 2008, when the Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded a Gold Medal, and was also judged the second best Cabernet Sauvignon in the Paarl/Wellington/Tulbagh region of the competition.  Anton indicated that he has not fully retired from the wine industry, but will still be active in wine marketing and consulting. Anton may be reached at antonkrynauw@yahoo.com.

Winemaker Anton Krynauw joined Montpellier in 2003 as the first winemaker under the new ownership of Lucas van Tonder. With a Bsc from Stellenbosch University, Anton started his career in the wine industry at Distillers Corporation, afterwards moving to the Ashton Cooperative Cellar where he became a winemaker. Many years later he became an independent consultant, and gained experience in building and implementing new wine cellars. He also has many years of experience in the exporting of wine all over the world.
